The NYPD reached a settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which sued authorities for their response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) riots in 2020. Officers must now stop 'kettling’ protestors and “other excessive use of force” practices.

The ACLU’s New York chapter, the Legal Aid Society, and the state Attorney General Letitia James announced the “landmark agreement” after they sued Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, Chief of Department Terence Monahan, the City of New York, and several individual police officers for their roles in the “protests” over three years ago.

You mean the same “protests” that resulted in one of the most expensive insurance claims in history, right?

The suit claimed the mayor and city instituted a de facto policy allowing officers to violently target “protesters” by approving forceful deployments and refusing discipline for “blatant officer misconduct.”

It’s hard to believe anyone could forget how New York City descended into complete chaos for quite some time after rioters flooded the streets, looted, vandalized property, and destroyed businesses.

But that’s probably because the police were the problem here, right? The police were the “violent” ones. It is their “misconduct” that needs to be disciplined, right?

“This landmark settlement holds the NYPD, the nation’s largest and most influential police force, to its oath to protect New Yorkers’ right to protest,” Molly Biklen, Deputy Legal Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union said. “The NYPD’s violent response to protestors during the 2020 demonstrations for Black lives made clear to the world what too many New Yorkers already knew, that the NYPD is unable or unwilling to police itself. Today’s settlement ensures the NYPD can no longer indiscriminately deploy the notorious Strategic Response Group to protest and no longer escalate force on a whim.”

Don’t let these people gaslight you. 2020 ended as one of America's most violent years in decades and the country changed, likely forever, due to these “protests.”

This is the same city where "protesters" damaged over 300 police cars, costing the City $1 million.

The deal will end a crowd-control tactic known as “kettling,” a term that describes officers barricading individuals with the intent to arrest them or take other police action against them. The department will also have to abide by a new four-tiered response system that will minimize police presence and require officers to use de-escalation methods before increasing their response.

Demoralizing the police couldn’t have an impact on public safety, could it? These protests claimed to be fighting racial justice, so these protests would only help black people, right?

Well, not exactly. The share of Black murder victims actually rose from 53% in 2019 to 58% in 2021.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry noted to CNN “serious concerns about its impact on the safety of police officers and all New Yorkers in future situations involving coordinated violent actions.”

“Nearly 400 NYPD members were injured during the summer 2020 protests, but there has been zero accountability for the agitators who used the protests as cover to assault police officers,” Hendry said in his statement to CNN. “This settlement does not change that. If anything, it may serve to encourage future violence.”

In July, New York City agreed to pay more than $13 million to settle a lawsuit brought on behalf of roughly 1,300 people who were arrested during demonstrations in 2020.

Rather than hold people accountable for their actions, the City goes and actually compensates them. But don't worry, I don't think anyone would actually take advantage of the fact police can no longer utilize effective control tactics. I am sure crime will only go down from here.

And I am sure it is just a coincidence that NYPD cops are resigning at a record-breaking pace and has nothing to do with the City's anti-police sentiment.
