While Zohran Mamdani may present himself as a champion of progressivism and the Muslim community, actions speak louder than words.
It turns out that many Muslim voters are more conservative than progressive. Therefore, it stands to reason that many of them might not support him if they were fully aware of his actual positions and track record.
One Muslim was shocked to discover that the man he thought would represent his interests actually supports the legalization of sex work—an issue that many Muslims strongly oppose.
It’s unclear exactly how Mamdani would have responded to this voter’s realization, but it’s probably safe to assume that it was the last thing he wanted this man to discover. Nonetheless, we are living in strange times when Andrew Cuomo seems like the preferable choice between the two.
It’s also unclear what this voter believed Mamdani stood for, but it was very likely anything but that. While he claims to advocate for free benefits and theories that have historically contributed to severe economic crises, the last thing he could have imagined was the decriminalization or legalization of prostitution.
It’s also safe to conclude that anyone surprised by this realization hasn’t been paying close attention, but we are not here to blame the victim—propaganda is a very real and effective political force.
According to the New York Post:
Mamdani, though a Muslim, promotes leftist views and positions that are out of sync with more conservative members of the Islamic faith.
Cuomo claimed he’s promoting a pro-safety agenda while Mamdani is not.
“My opponent’s direction is the exact opposite — a socialist philosophy that is anti-business, more anti-police, and would reduce the number of officers. It would legalize prostitution and the drug trade,” Cuomo told the congregants.
It’s unclear exactly what the fate of NYC would be if the city were in Cuomo’s hands, but we can say without a doubt that public safety would not be prioritized under a Mamdani administration.
The campaign of ex-Gov. Cuomo, now running as an independent for mayor after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, also posted a video of comments Mamdani previously made in support of pro-prostitution legislation he co-sponsored as a New York state Assembly member.
“I will like to register my support for such legislation. My eagerness for the debate and for my fundamental belief that sex work is work,” Mamdani said.
When attempting to play both sides of the spectrum, this was likely the last thing Mamdani wanted people to discover. Nonetheless, the internet exists, and Cuomo had the receipts. We can only hope the uninformed masses realize this before it’s too late. Until then, things still look uncertain for the hopeful Cuomo.
