Limits on useless loans are starting, and liberal women are hardest hit. Today’s show breaks it down.

New changes to how student loan payments are disbursed could cap the amount available for certain colleges and professions.

More changes are underway for federal student loans with major implications for current and future graduate students. It comes after a federal judge temporarily blocked some new loan limits from the Department of Education, including limits affecting some professional degrees. William Brangham discussed the changes with Danielle Douglas-Gabriel of The Washington Post.

“Our entire education system and even the tenure of a lot of professors is predicated on the idea that Uncle Sam is going to write a check, so let us just have you here in perpetuity where we can indoctrinate you forever,” Crowder said. “This administration is the first one to say we are not going to do that anymore.”

Previously, the department had limited the amount a student could borrow for graduate programs that train nurses, physician assistants, and certain other roles. But there are other changes under way. A new provision championed by Republicans just took effect, which could limit the money available for certain colleges and certain professions.

“You actually have to have something to show for it. If you are a professor, you actually have to show you improve the lives of your students. If students want a loan, they have to prove it is going to be useful and they will benefit society,” Crowder said. “You have to make it work. You have to be successful if you want us to help you.”

It requires these programs prove that graduates, on average, earn more than high school graduates. If not, they could lose access to federal student loans.

“That has an effect on entire faculty departments,” Crowder said.

According to the LA Times, “To keep federal loans flowing, the median income of graduates for a school’s bachelor's degree, associate degree and undergraduate certificate programs must be higher than the median earnings of people who received only a high school diploma.”

“Right now, it is good. It could end up being great,” Crowder said.
