LAPD Plants Fake Pedestrian To Trick Drivers

NEW: The LAPD is setting up drivers by having someone walk across the street in an "unmarked crosswalk" so they can then give tickets to people who don't stop.
"Recently, LAPD Van Nuys division conducted a Pedestrian Enforcement Taskforce," they shared online.

LAPD’s Van Nuys division took the time to set drivers up by planting a fake pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk. Drivers were either cited or educated based on their response. And while it is great that the department wants to uphold safety by ensuring drivers are properly educated on pedestrian laws, you would think this would be the last thing it spends time on.
Critics of the enforcement operation imply this is entrapment, while proponents are almost nonexistent. Draw your own conclusions.
According to the LAPD, “Though the Taskforce has received negative attention in the past, know that we are here for a reason.”
It is unclear what this “reason” is.
However, the reason this likely gets negative attention is that people don’t like it when you trick them into an infraction. Additionally, some critics also claim this means the department condones jaywalking, while it accuses drivers of being the problem. Again, draw your own conclusion.
This is not the first California police department to “trick” drivers while in their vehicles. In 2024, the San Francisco Police Department had an officer in a chicken costume step into a crosswalk to ticket a driver for failing to yield, which was also a way to educate drivers on pedestrian laws.

Why does it seem like the more crime an area has, the more time officers have to waste? The math is not adding up.
