"Listen to the screams:" Female field hockey player severely injured by male allowed to play on girls' high school team
A high school athlete had her teeth knocked out in a high school field hockey game when a male player on the other team shot the ball in her face.
The male player was taking a shot on goal. Instead, he nailed the female player in the face so hard you can audibly hear the impact. The girl immediately dropped to the ground, crying in pain.
The video of the incident was shared by girls' sports advocate Riley Gaines.
This is the male player in question.
Some of you may be noticing I said "male" athlete instead of "trans" athlete and am not having excessive fun with pronouns. It can get confusing when you're attempting to be scientifically accurate while also trying to construct a sentence structure that makes sense as you read it.
In this case, the male isn't pretending to be a female. He was allowed on the girls' team for the same reason they would let a girl play on the boys' football team. Just because he wanted to play field hockey, and there wasn't a boys' field hockey team for him to play on.
It is because he isn't identifying/pretending to be a girl that there are calls to have that rule changed. Dighton Rehoboth’s Superintendent Bill Runey said in a letter: "This injury required hospitalization. The player, her family, teammates, and coaches remain in my prayers. The shot was taken by a male member of the Swampscott girls’ field hockey team. While I understand that the MIAA has guidelines in place for co-ed participation under section 43 of their handbook, this incident dramatically magnifies the concerns of many about player safety."
Critics have been comparing the incident to Payton McNabb, a North Carolina college volleyball star who suffered a concussion when a male player on the opposing team spiked a ball in her face. The difference there is the male IDENTIFIED as a female, which now makes -- her -- a female in the eyes of the NCAA and the Biden Adminstration.
Since the Massachusetts field hockey player identifies as a dude, because -- and I can't stress this enough -- he's a dude, it is not transphobic to acknowledge the biological reasons why boys are naturally stronger than girls. Nor is it intolerant for Supervisor Runey to call for a rule change as much as it's just common sense.
Of course, the male hockey player could still decide he's really a girl after all. Thus making criticism of the way he ruined a poor girl's life a hate crime and forcing Supervisor Runey to take a leave of absence while he educates himself on the matter. The rules get confusing.
