Robots Must Now Get Sundays Off To Rest, German Court Rules
Union heads are some of the laziest members of society. They often demand more compensation for the fewer hours these people work. And they will take on any absurd battle if it results in less work. But no one expected that the push for laziness in the workplace would include shop robots, which is exactly what happened in Germany.
A German court has just ruled that shop robots are also entitled to a day of rest and must get Sundays off.
And please don’t try and make any sense out of this story. Because you won’t find any.
Robots working long hours in supermarkets are just as entitled to a day of rest as their human counterparts, a German court has ruled, upholding a centuries-old ban on Sunday commerce.
Tegut, a regional chain now experimenting with some 40 fully-automated stores, has been embroiled in a legal battle since service sector union Verdi argued allowing the shops to stay open could have 'knock-on effects' for human workers.
The highest administrative court in the state of Hesse agreed that the innovative new stores, in operation for the last four years, should be made to close on Sundays, citing a 1,700-year-old Christian principle of 'Sunday rest' enshrined in the constitution since 1919.
Thomas Stäb, a board member of Tegut, told the Financial Times the ruling was 'entirely grotesque', arguing that the stores were 'basically walk-in vending machines'. He said Sundays accounted for some 25-30 per cent of the automated stores' weekly trade.
The Verdi union contested that the success of such shops could see rivals pushing for further relaxation of Sunday trading rules, however, arguing workers need the guaranteed day off to spend time with loved ones.
What exactly will these robots do on their “day of rest?”
The whole reasoning behind it is absurd. “If robots work Sundays, then humans might be forced to work, too.” Make it make sense.
Human laws should only apply to humans. What, are they going to get maternity leave next? And who will they be praying to on their religious day of rest? Silicon Valley Tech Gods?
Here is a wild thought: How about the store owners decide when and if they will close? Because we now have a store being forced to slash 30 percent of its weekly trade to give “vending machines” a day of rest.
To say this is pathetic would be an understatement.
Is it too much to ask that we not start giving robots rights? Because I cannot even imagine what a horrendous slippery slope that would create. But I guess Germany may figure that one out for us.
