Some proponents of firing-squad-style executions argue that it is far quicker, more effective, and gives the public the idea of what it truly means to be sentenced to death. The federal government has confirmed that this will be included in the way the DOJ “restores its solemn duty to seek, obtain, and implement lawful capital sentences.”
According to Fox News:
The Department of Justice on Friday directed the Bureau of Prisons to expand death penalty protocols to include pentobarbital injections and firing squads as part of broader actions to strengthen the federal death penalty.
"Among the actions taken are readopting the lethal injection protocol utilized during the first Trump Administration, expanding the protocol to include additional manners of execution such as the firing squad, and streamlining internal processes to expedite death penalty cases," the memo read.
The most recent inmate to be executed by firing squad occurred in South Carolina in 2025.
According to CNN:
A convicted double murderer has been executed by firing squad – the first such execution in the United States since 2010, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
The execution of Brad Sigmon, 67, by the South Carolina Department of Corrections on Friday is only the fourth firing squad execution in the US since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
Proponents of this method claim it is far more effective and “humane.” And while the firing squad may be seen as an outdated method of execution by some, this administration believes otherwise. Whether or not this is more appropriate for the federal government to utilize when it sentences people to death is up to you to decide.
