There are a lot of things Gavin Newsom can’t do. This includes solving homelessness, preventing his state from burning down, and, as of writing this, he can’t meme. But that won’t stop him from trying—even though he backed laws to regulate some AI-generated content.
Newsom is trying to stay relevant and connect with the younger generation, a demographic he clearly sees as crucial if he wants to be president. Maybe that’s why he decided to post an AI-generated video of Vance. The problem? It wasn’t even remotely funny. That’s not to say we should automatically have a bad attitude about it—it just ended up being really boring and a pretty pathetic attempt to appeal to the young crowd.
According to The Post Millennial:
California Governor Gavin Newsom has faced backlash after posting an AI-edited video mocking Vice President JD Vance, despite his administration's efforts to regulate deepfake content.
The real problem isn’t simply that Democrats come off like out-of-touch boomers who couldn’t relate to Gen Z if their lives depended on it. The deeper issue is that they selectively enforce laws depending on political affiliation—and that kind of double standard deserves full condemnation.
Additionally, Newsom's office released another AI-generated video portraying Vance as overweight and with curly hair, discussing "couches," a reference to a lie that Vance had a sexual experience with a couch.

The only people who would find this funny are those who would never vote Republican, even if their lives depended on it. Everyone else who would never vote Democrat knows just how unfunny it is—and no amount of memes or AI-generated content can change that. But the real problem arises when this is only considered illegal for Conservatives, while he backed a law that benefited Kamala.
The posts quickly drew criticism due to the apparent hypocrisy. Last year, California implemented several laws designed to crack down on AI memes posted online, particularly ones that are “materially deceptive" or that compromise a candidate’s “electoral prospect” during election season.
This also applied to content satirical in nature that did not include a disclaimer. Newsom backed the laws in an effort to protect then-VP Kamala Harris from memes in ads making fun or her.
This is precisely why we have a saying about the left’s double standard: “That would be the only standard these people live by.” Nonetheless, the sheer cringe of the left trying to meme should be a crime in itself. Newsom probably thinks he outdid himself with that one—and for that, he should be mocked endlessly.
