They're shaming Mr. Beast for giving 500,000 people clean drinking water... he's white and makes government look bad
YouTuber Mr. Beast is giving 500,000 people clean drinking water, and for some reason, there are people upset over it.
The funniest thing in all of this is that Mr. Beast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, called the shot prior to the video dropping.
He's referencing that last "how dare Mr. Beast help people" controversy when he provided sight-restoring cataract surgery for a thousand people. Critics shamed him for, quote, "charity porn." Also suggesting rich influencers should not use. their money and influence to help fix society and healthcare.
I'm guessing, by the way Yahoo News framed their article, rich influencers should just let the government take their money from them and let bureaucrats "fix" problems. Which gets to the other problem. Mr. Beast exposed how a) easy it is to do and b) how corrupt government bureaucracy is.
Beast built the wells in Kenya. One journalist said, “It’s embarrassing that a YouTuber jetted into Kenya on a charity tour to perform tasks our taxes should have completed ages ago.” That is true. You should be embarrassed by your government. Though I'd argue the charity shaming of someone helping is unnecessary.
The founder of an African organization working to improve water structure and, it would appear, failing to do so, race-shamed Beast. It's bad enough a rich person is using his personal wealth to fix problems. But does he have to be white too? “Overnight, this person comes along, who happens to be a white male figure with a huge platform, and all of a sudden, he gets all of the attention. It’s kind of frustrating, but it’s also understanding the nature of how the world is.”
Call me guilty of white privilege, but I don't think the 500,000 people who now have clean drinking water --- and school supplies and computers -- care that Donaldson looks like a jar of mayonnaise in a silly hat.
I'll be honest. I know nothing about Mr. Beast other than he is on the YouTubes, my niece is obsessed with Beast Bars, and Donaldson's sidekick recently abandoned his wife and children. If these "charity porn" videos help drive revenue that Beast uses for more charity... that's how it's supposed to work.
You find success, you use that success to help the people around you. Not that the government takes your success, wastes it not helping people, then goes to take more of your success while calling you greedy for wanting to know how it's being spent.
Some people need to shut the f*ck up. At the top of the list are people criticizing those who are trying to help.
