Mike Rowe Doubles Down on Bernie Sanders/Free College Comments

Brodigan
December 22, 2015

We have an unhealthy obsession with Mike Rowe (seriously, it's bad), but he really stepped in it with Bernie Sanders supporters after he went off on Sanders latest education meme. Keep in mind that Bernie's supporters understand economics about as well as Bernie does. Trust me, I know (watch "Bernie's Plan Thoroughly Debunked" here). Naturally, the trolls are on the attack.

One of them is a cat named Lars who wants "free college for all." Yeah, about that...

Obviously, I’m not an economist. In fact, as Lars indicated, I may well be a moron. But if I wanted to drive the cost of college through the roof, I would first encourage employers to make a college degree a condition of employment. Then, I’d tell every high school kid their futures depended on getting a diploma. Then, I’d make sure that pop culture portrayed all non-college careers as second-class occupations. Finally, I’d make available an unlimited pile of money, and encourage those same kids to borrow whatever they needed to pay for that degree.

Now, regarding “free college for all." Again, I’m not an expert, but I don’t see how giving something away drives down it’s real cost. Are the professors and administrators going to lower their salaries? Are the colleges going to be forced to run more efficiently? I have no idea, but from what I’ve seen of the species, I believe most people do better when they have at least some skin in the game. And I have no reason to assume that making college free will create better students.

Lars, you just got taken to school. By... by Mike Rowe. See what I did there?

It seems that the Bernie propaganda works incredibly well on his supporters, and on precisely zero people who understand economics and/or run businesses. Which may explain why Mike Rowe is immune to Bernies dark-side-mind-control trick. I've talked about this before, and at the risk of sounding like a broken record...

Think about what a brilliant ploy this is for Bernie. For just a second.

  1. Receive votes from non-tax-paying students by promising them free college.
  2. Send everyone to college for free where leftists are indoctrinating them for a lifetime to come.
  3. Profit.

Think “indoctrinating” is a strong word? Well, I think “segregated cultural safe spaces” “trigger warnings” and “mandatory cultural sensitivity training” are all strong words, so there’s that.

Mike Rowe is making a bigger point that resonates with many Americans but is oft ignored by the media on both the left and the right; that there are plenty of intelligent, capable, contributing Americans who are simply not cut out for academia. Why look down your noses at employers, entrepreneurs, and innovators simply because you have an expensive piece of paper indicating a learning experience achieved less expensively on Google?

Then let me ask you, (yes, using two extreme examples to make a point here) who is more valuable to a country?

Someone who doesn’t go to college, learns a trade, advances in the workplace, pays taxes and eventually employs other Americans?

Or the lifelong student living on student loans and eventually, if they’re lucky enough to become a professor, government grants?

Finally, it's one thing to make empty promises, but does the math on Bernie's plan actually add up? Watch below.
