Gather around and take a knee. Because an old white dude is telling the young generation to stop being stupid with the money they have. And oy vey, is the young generation upset by it. This 2025 clip of Kevin O'Leary on "The Diary of a CEO" podcast with Steven Bartlett is making its way around Cousin Elon's internet again.
I'm sure Mr. Wonderful and O'Leary had a delightful conversation full of excellent advice. But this is the clip the foreign X-Twitter account posted to get that sweet and lazy engagement cash.
"Can't stand it when I see kids who are making $70,000 a year spending $28 for lunch. That's just stupid. Think about that in the context of being put into an index fund."
Set aside that O'Leary is a horrible spokesman for data centers. And that if you only save that $28 for one day a week, that's close to $1500 you can invest. And let's even set aside that "$28" is a random number O'Leary threw out there to describe the dumb things people spend money on, and he could have easily just said if they saved on DoorDash charges.
People took the number literally, and say that's literally how much lunch costs.
Lunch just costs $28 now. Are they not supposed to eat? https://t.co/zyDNapd1Li

A Chipotle burrito costs $15. Ground beef is $7 a pound. Inflation is financially crippling Gen Z.
Once again, an out-of-touch rich boomer is lecturing young people. https://t.co/SeU5MFrKaC

I'm not denying that families are facing struggles. And it would be nice if the president were more focused on those struggles than on ballrooms and who Lauren Boebert endorses. Multiple things can be true, and that, also, dumb financial decisions also play a part in it. Symphatize with families, sure. Those aren't the people upset with being told they should eat out less.
It's like when Democrat staffers want to make a point of how hard it is to afford food, and will post a picture of a slice of Gouda on a croissant. It costs $15 dollars for a burrito at Chipotle? It costs $9 for a pound of chicken breast, and a pre-made tossed salad in a bag costs 2 for $7. $16 and I have lunch for the entire week.
People get outraged when boomers tell them to live within their means. Outside circumstances notwithstanding, those boomers still usually have a point.
