Watch: Meet Jonathan Zimmerman, the one college professor willing to step up to debate Steven Crowder

On Today’s show, Steven debated Professor Jonathan Zimmerman from UPenn. Here’s what you should know.
While Zimmerman is a liberal Democrat, he chose to appear on the show because he believes people only learn when you talk to people you disagree with.
“Right now, with the country so polarized, it is important for people who have different points of view to converse with each other,” Zimmerman said.
Although both agree that Free Speech is paramount, Zimmerman believes the Trump Administration is restricting speech in harmful ways, adding that while both agree that universities have done a lot to silence dissenting views, he also believes that the White House is engaging in censorship.
One example he used is an executive's order that bars schools from teaching critical race theory, adding that while he can understand disagreements with the theory, schools should have the right to decide what they teach.
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) in K-12 schools, a move his administration says is aimed at refocusing American education on fundamental subjects such as math and reading. Schools that continue CRT-related lessons risk losing federal aid, according to DC News Now.
Zimmerman also added that the reason he dislikes Trump is that the president's rhetoric does a disservice to the other side, failing to unify the country. When Crowder pointed out both sides are to blame, Zimmerman agreed, adding that the left calls the right a whole bunch of isms, like transphobic, while Trump calls many on the left things like “low IQ.”
“It is the same in the sense that it is a substitution of name-calling for argument,” Zimmerman said. “Two wrongs don't make a right. Just because we view silly slurs to clamp down on speech does not mean the president of the United States should be doing it.”
