Today's letter comes to us via youtube from a misses "Berta Lovejoy" seen below.
"You're completely wrong on so many levels Steven, "Real Rape" and "Rape Culture" are no different from each other. All men are potential rapists and should be treated as such. Lena Dunham was raped, wether she agrees with it or not. She was forced to have sex with a man she didn't want to have sex with, she was too scared to say anything for fear of violence as males are a violent gender. I've been in a similar situation myself. I let the man have sex with me, I didn't like it but I was too scared to tell him to stop. I was literally raped, and it saddens me hearing sexist men say otherwise.Berta Lovejoy, Feminist, Promoter Of Equality, Love, and Peace."
Firstly Berta, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. That sounds really crummy. If he forced himself upon you, of course that's a crime and you should prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. You didn't explicitly state that, however and that's a concern. I'm sure that in your mind you were raped, but can you really accuse that man of being a "rapist" since you admittedly never told him that you didn't want to have sex? Perhaps had he known, he wouldn't have wanted to fornicate. We can never know, and that's my point. Instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt, you opt to slander him with a title that he hasn't yet rightfully earned. The title of "rapist." Seems to me (from what you've written here) is that he's only guilty of being a poor mind-reader.
You say that all men are "potential rapists". Okay, by your logic, all women are also potential rapists. So you'd be just as guilty as any man. See how that works? You say that "real rape and rape culture are no different". Are you suggesting that an objectifying hip-hop video shares an identical moral equivalency with the act of sodomizing a woman at gun-point? They're no different from each other? Like, for realzies?
Finally, I'd like to address your point claiming that "males are a violent gender". I just don't know how you are able to make such a broad, sweeping generalization. Women can now join the military, fight professionally and currently commit domestic abuse at a rate similar to men. As I'm sure you know, it's not fair to paint all men into a corner based on the acts of a disgusting few. By that logic, I'd simply use yourself as an example to affirmatively state that "all females are an accusatory, hell-bent on destroying the lives of every man" gender... and that wouldn't be fair.
I know you wouldn't want to be unfair. Because you know... equality and such.
