CREDIT WHERE DUE: The ACLU Challenges DC Metro for Violating First Amendment
Yes, that ACLU. As in the one that thinks anti-genital mutilation bills are Islamophobic and whose director has said Donald Trump supporters should probably be killed (see ACLU Director: 'Kill Donald Trump Supporters...' Yes, Really). Fun stuff. They can be a box of looney tunes to be sure. Okay? Okay.
Looks like the group recently struck up an odd allegiance with the First Amendment. It's truly something none of us saw coming. But as the old adage goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day if you don't smack it into oblivion from frustration.
The American Civil Liberties Union and its affiliates in the District of Columbia and Virginia today challenged the Washington area transit system's advertising restrictions as violations of the First Amendment.
The case was filed on behalf of the ACLU; women's health care collective Carafem, specializing in family planning and abortion care; Milo Worldwide LLC, the company of conservative commentator and writer Milo Yiannopoulos; and animal rights non-profit [PETA].
The lawsuit argues that parts of the agency's ad policies violate the First Amendment by discriminating against particular ads and advertisers deemed controversial by WMATA officials.
"In its zeal to avoid hosting offensive and hateful speech, the government has eliminated speech that makes us think, including the text of the First Amendment itself. The ACLU could not more strongly disagree with the values that Milo Yiannopoulos espouses, but we can't allow the government to pick and choose which viewpoints are acceptable."
That last paragraph is the money shot. The ACLU perfectly encapsulated the entire point of the First Amendment. The government doesn't get to pick and choose.
For once, the left has managed to legitimately surprise us... By being completely rational.
Folks, this is where beauty happens. Being able to openly discuss our differences while fighting for both sides' freedom to disagree is what separates the United States of America from every other country in the world, ever. We don't have to agree on every little thing. We don't have to like what each other says, believes, or represents. But we never advocate the silencing of their right to say it.
Stories like this come as a breath of fresh air. One can't help but feel a pang of hope when the left and right can unite to demand our liberties be upheld.
This is what the social justice warrior seeks to destroy. Hence classic liberals are splitting from the modern left. See Dave Rubin Perfectly Explains Why He Abandoned the Left and Gay New Yorker Perfectly Explains Why He's Conservative. 'Tolerant' Leftists Attack! Not even leftists themselves are completely safe from this cannibalistic machine. Breaking the narrative makes anyone - left or right - a fair target in the eyes of the new progressive regime.
So kudos to the ACLU on accomplishing what's probably the only thing it's done right in recent history. It's a start. We need to encourage more of this. Let's not only give credit where due, let's encourage more reasonable responses.
