Zohran Mamdani decided to post his two cents on the anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack committed by Hamas against Israel, and to claim he missed the mark would be an understatement. Today’s show breaks it down.
According to ABC 7:
His statement on Wednesday said the suffering did not begin nor end that day, and "it has continued through Israeli government's devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza."
This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.
The suffering did not begin nor end that day.
“It did kind of end that day for the Israelis, which is who on this day you are supposed to be commemorating,” Crowder said.
It instead continued through the Israeli government's devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them - all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.
“I do not think that any members of Hamas should live with freedom, safety, and dignity. This is not to address the children, of course; that is awful. Innocent lives lost in war are terrible. We understand that,” Crowder added.
However, when it comes to claims of genocide, you don't tend to see population growth if that were true. Gaza’s population has gone up 2,500% since Israel became a country, and it continues to grow.
“Genocide usually means fewer people than when you started,” Crowder said.
On another note, the survival rate for Arabs during the war in Gaza is 99%. During the Holocaust, it was 30% for Jews.
“The hallmark of WWII was that innocent people, entire cities, were being killed at a rate that we had not seen. And so, your choice is that we are in a world where our innocent civilians are being killed at record numbers, and so, is that option worse than the other option, which is to fight back in the war knowing that there will be innocent lives lost even though that is not our target?” Crowder said. “There are no good options. There are only less bad options. Allow your innocent people to continue being slaughtered or fight back, and you know that innocent people, unfortunately, are going to die on both sides. The targeting of innocent people is very different from the targeting of a military force.”
This does not mean you can’t disagree on the war and the approach.
“But we do have to start [the conversation] with innocent people being killed because they were targeted as such vs. the response. I do not know why that is a novel concept to so many people now,” Crowder said.
