Seattle’s new mayor Katie Wilson: "We will not allow grocery chains to close stores at will" pic.twitter.com/YQUpJyWy0H

According to Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, “Access to affordable, healthy food is a basic human right.” This is why she refuses to “allow giant grocery chains to stomp all over communities and close stores at will.” She claims this will “leave behind food deserts.” This is why she will “explore public option grocery stores.”
There are so many things wrong with this statement that it’s hard to know where to begin.
Firstly, I don’t ever recall a time in human history when the government was able to adequately provide food for the entire population. Do you? I didn't think so. That’s because whenever the government attempts to take over the food supply, people always seem to starve. Weird how that is.
Additionally, in what world does she believe she has the right or power to keep stores from closing simply because she demands they feed the population? That’s not a thing, and she likely knows it. This is why it’s not a stretch to call this tyrannical overreach, despite her attempts to dance around the issue and make herself appear compassionate.
What’s even up with this new trend of leftist mayors trying to create government-run grocery stores? Get real. They don’t have the resources or competence to succeed in such an endeavor—one I believe they never intended to bring to fruition.
The worst part? She’s got a whole list of social programs that she can never deliver on.
Wilson has made remarkable promises. Government-owned grocery stores to combat food deserts. Rent control across the city. Universal summer childcare. Social housing developments. A capital gains tax on top of the JumpStart payroll tax. All funded by what she calls “rebalancing” our tax system, which means significantly higher taxes on businesses and anyone she defines as wealthy.
LOL. Universal summer childcare is also a bit of a stretch, if you ask me. And why does it always seem that the more social housing programs we have, the higher the homeless population rises? That’s unclear, but you’re free to draw your own conclusions.
Not only does she want to force big stores to stay open, but she also wants to tax them into oblivion. In other words, if she can’t do it herself, she’s going to try to force everyone else. Incredible, yet deeply pathetic.
At this point, all that’s left to do is keep the sane voters in our prayers. The naive population prevailed in this election, and unfortunately, that seems to be a Seattle problem—for now. That is, until a new leftist mayor comes to a city near you.
