The problem with equity is that it brings other people down to artificially inflate those who don't deserve it. This is precisely what two New York City Councilmembers are doing about New York's specialized high schools, which are designed for “gifted” students.

According to Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn, “70% of the kids who access the seats in the discovery program are white or asian. So, we are not actually reaching into black and Latino communities, the folks who are being kept out of our specialized high schools. It wasn't always like this. Twenty years ago, 40% of the kids in our specialized high schools were black and Latino. Today, it is just 10%. Over 60% of the kids in our public school system are black and Latino. There are so many excellent students. They deserve access to our most prestigious flagship high schools.”

The problem with this is that he is implying this has a thing or two to do with racism. Society has only become less racist over the years, and to solve this racism that does not exist, leftists like Restler are proposing to uplift one race over another. You cannot get any more racist than that.

He believes the way to fix this is by getting rid of the admission tests or looking at other factors for admission. Again, this is solely intended to help certain races, while slapping the other two races in the face for their hard work. Last time I checked, it was illegal to discriminate against race. Weird.

According to BK Reader:

Council Members Nantasha Williams of Queens and Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn introduced the Specialized High School Excellence and Integration Plan, which proposes that the Specialized High School Admissions Test not be the only way for prospective students to be accepted into academically demanding schools.

According to the Council members, 11 percent of Brooklyn Tech's freshman class this school year were Black and Latino students. More than half were Asian while 23 percent of the offers went to white students.

While there were no reported instances of racism, leftists believe this is, in fact, racist, solely because they do not like the numbers. Unfortunately for them, that is not how reality works. And for them to go and change the status quo to artificially lift one or two races is, by definition, the most racist thing you can do. These people should be doing everything to ensure all students, regardless of race, achieve excellence. This is totally ridiculous.
