Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2222, which gives tax credits to local newsrooms. Today’s show breaks it down.
According to KPBS:
Starting in 2027, Assembly Bill 2222, authored by Assemblymember Chris Ward, D-San Diego, and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, will provide qualifying digital, broadcast and print news organizations with credits based on the number of journalists they employ or hire.
According to Newsom, “when you lose local journalism, partisan organizations step in.”
“For anyone to think what you are about to hear is good, you have to buy into the premise that local journalism, affiliates to major networks, are unbiased and nonpartisan. That the only people who are partisan are the citizen journalists that he is trying to shut down,” Crowder said. “He does not need to shut them down; he just needs to fund the national journalists who give him a pass.”
Newsom added, there is “more bias that is expressed,” and in Calif., there are even "propaganda machines” causing chaos.
“There are only three places where you see the ideological monolith as you see at the Ivy League. You don't even see it in San Francisco, Seattle, or Portland. The only places where it goes more than 95%, and in some places 99%, are academia, media, and the entertainment industry,” Crowder said. “So, you get a degree from this institution, you are now going to be subsidized in this other institution.”
The bill, also known as the Community NEWS Act, provides credits of $20,000 per full-time journalist for the first five journalists, $15,000 for each additional full-time journalist, and an additional $15,000 for each new full-time journalism position. Qualified part-time journalists would net credits of $7,500 each.
“It guarantees that the people who go to the institutions are the only ones who are considered qualified,” Crowder said. “Who do you think will have a vested interest in winning the elections? The person who slashes their budget or the person who forces the taxpayer to subsidize your job that should no longer exist?”
