It's rare for a Democrat in a deep-blue state to be challenged on much of anything. Then elections roll around, they get forced into a single debate with their Republican opponent, and they get exposed for being terrible. Our latest example is New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who attempted to hide her horrible record by answering everything with a noun and a verb and a "but Trumpity Trumpy Trump Trump." Her opponent, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, wasn't having it.

Hochul short-circuited before the debate even started while attempting to give an opening statement.

There were three key areas. One is when it comes to the cost of living. New York is one of the most unafforable states to live in. It's usually in competition with California. Notice a trend?

According to Hochul, who has been either governor or lieutenant governor for almost a decade, Donald Trump is to blame for the state being unaffordable. According to Blakeman, the current governor of New York is to blame for New York being unaffordable.

Immigration was a big issue. Hochul has made it a cornerstone of her campaign to value illegal immigrants over American citizens, so much so that she has been bragging she prevents NY law enforcement from working with ICE. She had a sob story about an alleged father who was minding his own business outside of a Home Depot.

Blakeman had 52,000 sob stories about the victims of illegal immigrants that Kathy is responsible for.

We have an epidemic of crime from these illegal migrants. There are 16,000 detainees out there for people who committed 52,000 crimes in our state, and you won’t let local law enforcement cooperate with ICE to pick them up and get them out of this state. This never would have happened, Kathy, if it weren’t for your policies.

Then there was the Cornell 7. Let's set aside the facts and the text messages for a moment. Hochul decided to politicize in 2026 an alleged incident from 2024. 2026 political candidate Kathy Hochul says she is concerned for the "victim" now that it's national news. What about the Kathy Hochul who has been a trustee at Cornell the entire time, who had nothing to say about the "victim" prior?

You were the governor of the state. You funded Cornell University to the tune of $150 million a year. As a partner of the state of New York and as a trustee and as governor, you didn’t call for an independent investigation.

I get the cynicism about New York. Few people are more cynical than those of us who live here. But if you take away Manhattan and Brooklyn -- where low-information progressives living on top of each other are easily manipulated by social issues to vote against their self-interest -- New York is among the most competitive "purple" states in the country. Blakeman's key to victory is rallying the entire rest of the states.

The more these clips from last night get out, the more of a chance he is going to have.
