Every time JD Vance speaks, it makes me think they need to implement a basement strategy with Donald Trump. Air nothing but Trump highlights with a Fox News cryon at the bottom, give him a burner phone that he thinks is posting on Truth Social, and let JD Vance handle all communication on behalf of the Trump Administration. Because if the battle to pass the SAVE Act had been explained like THIS, there wouldn't be supporters threatening to sit out the midterm election.

While the public messaging about the SAVE Act was setting up supporters with unrealistic expectations, so much so that supporters are threatening not to vote because those expectations weren't met, Vance and Trump were apparently wargaming every aspect of getting it passed, including firing the parliamentarian (which Vance could have done), and determined it wouldn't have worked.

The problem is not who’s in the chair, the problem is four or five Republicans who are going to stand with the Democrats. We have wargamed this...

...to every detail and I wanted to do this a few months ago, and we ultimately decided it doesn’t make sense because it’s not going to go anywhere.

Vance also named names: Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Thom Tillis, and Lisa Murkowski. All senators who are always a problem for passing Trump's agenda. Three out of four aren't running for reelection this cycle.

We’re interested in winning the battle and that means replacing mediocre Republican senators with good Republican senators.

Imagine if, instead of setting unrealistic expectations about passing the SAVE Act, unrealistic expectations about eliminating the filibuster, kiboshing a housing bill because Trump was in his feelings, and saying affordability is a hoax that wasn't important because something something SAVE Act, THIS was part of disciplined messaging from the White House months ago.

The four Republicans Vance named are ALWAYS the problem. Three of their seats are up in November, and we have three actual conservative replacements, two of which are struggling now. Messaging the stakes like Vance is now would help drive turnout.

We need to hold the seats we have, like Ohio and Kansas, which are also struggling.

We need to add seats. New Hampshire, Michigan, and Minnesota (!) are all within striking distance.

Voters on our side are frustrated, and I get it. I even share the frustration. Some of that has to do with lousy messaging from an undisciplined Trump White House. Some of it has to do with the same lousy Republicans standing in the way.

Messaging the SAVE Act the way JD Vance does here would have solved both sources of frustration, and focused voters on what is at stake in November. It still can.
