More than a decade before the Civil War began, California had already banned slavery. While the laws were still far from perfect, it is reasonable to conclude that there have been no slaves for over 100 years. This is what makes it bizarre that Gavin Newsom is out there signing laws to “require large companies to search their records for ties to slavery, going back to 1849,” for the state to “then make it public.”
Gavin Newsom signs new law forcing companies to dig for slavery ties: “This is a bill that requires large companies to search their records for ties to slavery, going back to 1849. And then we make it public. Accountability starts with the truth.” pic.twitter.com/jAMrn7Mu2u

This is insane. This essentially punishes companies that do not need punishing. This assigns guilt to non-guilty people. The fact that he is promoting this law as if it puts the left on the “right side of history” is totally foolish.
According to Cal Matters:
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a first-in-the-nation law that requires large companies to disclose if they or their predecessors profited from chattel slavery.
California has countless problems, and deciding which companies to assign ancestral sins to is certainly not one.
The Truth in Disclosure Act will require major companies operating in the state to disclose these historical and financial ties to enslavement-related transactions.
Authored by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, a Democrat from Culver City, the law applies to companies with annual worldwide gross receipts over $100 million. Assembly Bill 2599 also requires relevant records and disclosures to be made publicly available through a searchable database to be established by the state’s Civil Rights Department.
I have a better idea. If we are going to start assigning guilt to companies for past sins, why don't we start with Planned Parenthood? As far as racism goes, one may argue that it is one of the most racist organizations founded and still in business today. Some may also argue there is more than enough evidence that proves much of its business model is still racist. Draw your own conclusions, but clearly, Margaret Sanger would like a word.
