WWE's Samoa Joe is Sick of People Tapping Out to Outrage Culture
Professional wrestling is, blessedly, politics-free. Mostly (see WWE Legend The Undertaker: STAND for the National Anthem and Libertarian Pro Wrestler Gets Elected Mayor. Here’s Why It Matters.). Sadly, wrestling has its share of virtue signaling. Like a company laying claim to the "women's evolution" when that company is the last on the planet to discover women's wrestling is cool. But 95% of the time, whether it's NXT or BTE, it allows viewers like me to escape the political malaise of our time.
Which brings me to this tweet from Samoa Joe.
Don't get it twisted. In no way do I believe Joe was making a planned statement. He most likely was bored on the treadmill this morning. But I still found the sentiment interesting. At least once a day I see a ridiculous story on the interwebs about someone getting offended by something not offensive; or a famous person being forced to apologize for something not offensive. Sometimes both. People sit in their mom's basement searching CELEBRITY + OFFENSIVE THING from 5 to 10 years back. Just because, reasons. Dumb reasons. Much like the "Moral Majority" drove a generation away from the right in the 80s-early 90s, the recreationally outraged are turning the un-outraged away from the left. Not that people are running to the right with open arms. There are many in the middle who just want to laugh at a joke without being attacked. In some instances, physically.
Wrestling fans, generally speaking, at least still have our sense of humor.
Though full disclosure. As I was writing this, I mayhaps have fallen into a trap.
My point is still valid.
I also hope AJ Styles kicks Samoa Joe's ass now this Sunday at SummerSlam. :-p
