The coach of a Vermont girls' basketball team is speaking out after the girls were banned from state competition. For you see, last year the team forfeited a game instead of playing against a boy who claims to be a girl. Vermont sided with the boy claiming to be a girl over the real girls. Now there is a lawsuit and it's a whole to do.

Chris Goodwin coaches at Mid-Vermont Christian School and was told that a girl on the other team was ackshually a boy, but was identifying as a girl. Goodwin pulled his team over the danger of competing against a boy. The Vermont Principals’ Association retaliated by banning the team from future competitions, because while the school is allowed its own opinion, "It cannot, however, impose those beliefs on students from other public and private schools; deny students from other schools the opportunity to play; or hurt students from other schools because of who those students are."

Except, Coach Goodwin didn't do any of that. His concern was the student from the other school (the boy claiming to be a girl) was hurting HIS students, stating it would be "irresponsible" and "asking for an injury" for his smaller female players to go up against the male on the other team.

I've got four daughters. I've coached them all at one point in their careers playing high school basketball. I've also filled in for the boy's coach when he can't make a practice, and I run those practices, and boys just play at a different speed, a different force… than the girls play.

So Goodwin is taking legal action. Interesting, because Vermont is already 0-1 in trans sports-related lawsuits. A Vermont school was forced to pay $125,000 to the family of Blake Allen, who spoke out on behalf of other female high school students uncomfortable with a naked boy in the girls' locker room. Her father Travis, who lost his coaching job for defending his teenage daughter not wanting to change in front of a girl with a penis, was reinstated as well.

The debate between "girls' safety" and "progressive equity" gets confusing. In neighboring Massachusetts, a girls' basketball team forfeited a game after THREE girls were injured by a six-foot male identifying as a girl on the other team.

The forfeiting team wasn't banned from competition in this instance. In response to girls fearing for their safety, the school issued a response that reiterated their values of both "inclusivity" and "safety" for all students. Even though the inclusivity took precedence over the safety.

That wasn't the case months earlier when under the same state guidelines, a high school athlete had her teeth knocked out in a high school field hockey game high school athlete had her teeth knocked out in a high school field hockey game when a male player on the other team shot the ball in her face. The male player was taking a shot on goal. Instead, he nailed the female player in the face so hard you can audibly hear the impact. The girl immediately dropped to the ground, crying in pain.

But in this instance, the male athlete DOESN'T identify as a girl. He identifies as a boy and uses a loophole in THE GUIDELINES to play girls' field hockey since there isn't a boy's team.

Since the Massachusetts field hockey player identifies as a dude, because -- and I can't stress this enough -- he's a dude, it was not transphobic to acknowledge the biological reasons why boys are naturally stronger than girls when the school superintendent issued a statement, "This injury required hospitalization. The player, her family, teammates, and coaches remain in my prayers. The shot was taken by a male member of the Swampscott girls’ field hockey team. While I understand that the MIAA has guidelines in place for co-ed participation under section 43 of their handbook, this incident dramatically magnifies the concerns of many about player safety."

Coach Goodwin's mistake seems to be pulling his team BEFORE one of his girls got injured by the male player. Had he waited until after one of the girls got injured, Vermont most likely would have called it even-stevens since one of the girls would have already been injured in the name of tolerance. Now it's in the court's hands.
