Rumor Mill: Is Donald Trump Keeping America in the Paris Agreement?
Normally, this would be something we'd chalk up to probable fake news, but consider the past week or two (see Report: Trump Cuts Deal with Schumer/Pelosi on DACA. But NOT the Wall… and Hot Mic Catches Chuck Schumer Saying Donald Trump “Likes Me”!), we've gotta bring it up. Are we pulling out of the Paris Agreement or not?
NEW YORK—Trump administration officials said Saturday the U.S. wouldn’t pull out of the Paris Agreement, offering to re-engage in the international deal to fight climate change, according to multiple officials at a global warming summit.“The U.S. has stated that they will not renegotiate the Paris accord, but they will try to review the terms on which they could be engaged under this agreement,” European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said.
The White House denies the report. At least for now:
Just about every non-leftist on the block was stoked when Trump said we'd be pulling out of the Paris Agreement. I know we were. I don't know about you, but a foreign super-government regulating our carbon output sounds like a crap deal to me. You would've thought it would sound like a sucky deal to Trump too, with all his anti-globalist talk. But now, especially in the wake of his DACA switcheroo, his position on the matter is unclear to say the least.
Prior to last week, with Trump getting rolled by Schumer and PeLOLsi, none of this would be disconcerting. But "unless we get pro-America terms" can be defined as many different ways as they're trying to define "amnesty" and "citizenship" lately. Those words can mean just about anything.
The Paris Accords are a giant pile of suck. Even if we agree to remain in the agreement "conditionally," we'd still be worse off than we'd be without it. The debate over global warming global cooling climate change is far from over. So, bowing down to the UN in the name of a crisis that may or may not even be happening doesn't sound very prudent.
Perhaps the Trump Administration could use a refresher course.
