Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Has Had Enough: Just Let Us Play Ball
Thanks to TakeTheKneeGateGhaziPalooza, a lot of of attention has been made to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a number of reasons (see Steeler's Coach Disses Player Who Saluted the National Anthem and The Backtracking Begins! Ben Roethlisberger Regrets Sitting Out the Anthem). And head coach Mike Tomlin has had enough.
That's for you political beatniks to ponder. We're a football group. You're asking us about middle ground. You're asking us about right or left. That's what you guys don't understand, we don't care - largely, professionally speaking. We have personal opinions, yes. Professionally, we're about to kick a ball off. You guys ever wonder what's going through man's head as he stands there, respectfully, as he listen to the anthem. He's probably thinking of a myriad of things that going to happen when that ball kicks off. If you ask him after who sung the anthem, he probably couldn't tell you. Did anybody think about that?
Let's be charitable for just a second. Prior to this weekend, there were only nine players who took a knee this season. Prior to this weekend, none (to my knowledge) were Steelers players. Okay? Okay.
Yes, this is the same Mike Tomlin who dissed his own player for walking out alone. Okay? Okay.
But it rather sounds like Tomlin is tired of #TakeAKnee. So is he being political or is he not?
This is a teachable moment when it comes to appeasing the left. Spoiler alert: it cannot be done.
Maybe Tomlin was sincere in his belief that refraining from the anthem entirely was the best option. Because anything anyone did would be scrutinized. Maybe if Tomlin could do it all over again, he would have answered the question about Alejandro Villanueva differently. Maybe he would've handled the anthem response differently. When a football coach expects questions about football but gets questions about something else (Trumpity Trumpy Trump), one's temper flares. The brian defecates in its metaphorical bed. Objects find themselves hurled through glass. You get the idea.
Before people reading this post shake their fists in rage, stop. This isn't about football.
THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T BOTHER APPEASING THE LEFT IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT'S NEVER ENOUGH!
Here, an illustration:
TOMLIN: Yeah, so we decided to just sit out the anthem, and I'm upset with Villaneuva. What was up with that guy?LEFTIST PRESS: That's all fine and good, but how will you appease our political viewpoint next week?
TOMLIN: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN SWEET IN ODIN'S BEARD, WHAT MORE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT FROM ME? JUST LET US PLAY SOME GOD DAMNED FOOTBALL!
LEFTIST PRESS: When you say 'you people...'
TOMLIN: (kicks over podium)
If Mike Tomlin told reporters to piss off two days ago as opposed to today, we'd have an entirely different story. His response today is the response one should always give to a leftist press with a political agenda.
Something to keep in mind going forward. For football players and us all.
