If you’re ensconced in the twenty-four-hour news cycle, you might believe this country is coming apart at the seams, that there’s nothing keeping this nation together, that but for the fact that it requires effort to conduct a civil war, this country would immediately separate into various little countries, each weirder than the last. I’m often right there with you. But every so often, Americans demonstrate exactly why we stick it out: because we’re Americans.

Regardless of political persuasion, gender, race, religion, etc., every American has a measure of patriotism that flows through their veins. Sometimes they just need the right moment for it to burst forth. Sporting events when the microphone goes out during the anthem is one of those types of moments.

I’m not a fan of soccer, but I’m definitely a fan of these soccer fans now.

Given the current climate of the country—and especially that of the international stage, where war is currently raging between Russia and Ukraine—this kind of demonstration is all the more impressive.

I can guarantee that stadium isn’t just packed with Republicans. I can guarantee everyone there isn’t straight or white or male. But I can guarantee that everyone singing loves this country, and that’s what matters. I’d really like to see more of this and less of people calling other people Nazis and fascists for no other reason than a difference of opinion. Can we all just be Americans?

Also, am I the only one that gets choked up for the National Anthem? Does anyone else get a little emotional? Maybe I’m just weird…
