Kudos to Salon. While Conservatives have been told that they’re crazy, and that “nobody wants to take your guns away!” Salon has the courage to admit that what liberals really want (what they’ve always wanted) is to completely repeal the Second Amendment…
We know this intuitively, since we’ve had to add numerous amendments to make up for their failures, lack, or just plain ignorance. But if we can add, we can also take away, by interpreting the Second Amendment differently or passing a new amendment that would effectively repeal it. We should never do so lightly, of course—taking away rights can be, and often is, a risky enterprise. But the purpose of a right should be individual and collective flourishing. A right, in other words, has as its goal the individual and common good, even if we don’t like to use such weighty moral terminology nowadays.
It’s not clear to me that gun ownership accomplishes that purpose. It seems more the case that it works against the good of all, in the havoc and murder it wreaks but also in the fear that in promotes. At the very least, we should have a discussion about the relationship of guns to the common good, instead of appealing like a fundamentalist to “rights” every time something happens that questions their value.
Flat-out, YES the left wants an all-out ban on guns. We’re not surprised by this at all, but for some liberals who think “gun control” is all about thorough background checks, limited capacity magazines, or the banning of scary guns based on their blackness or pistol grips, this could be news. Hopefully you’re sitting down. We told you so. Times a million.
To our faces when they’re on national TV or on the Twitterverse, liberals say “Nah, we don’t want to ban your guns,” but a mere few seconds later they praise the policy of Australia, which did enact a flat out ban (read Obama Praises Australia’s Gun Ban. The “narrative” needs to be flipped. After every mass shooting, we should demand the right to defend ourselves by suspending the restrictions on legally owned guns. I own several firearms, but I can only “legally” defend myself in my house. Unless I pay a large fee, submit to extraordinary invasions of privacy, and essentially “register” my guns – I cannot take them with me when I leave the house.

In my state, I can carry a 2 pound, .45 caliber pistol because I cannot carry a 200 pound cop. A few years ago a naked male with a pitch fork killed several children during a breaking and entering in a Californian home. The adults were not home, the oldest daughter knew how to wield a firearm, but the guns had to be locked up in accordance to California law, since there were children in that home. She ran next door to a neighbor, who declined to help. When the Sheriff Deputies finally arrived, they had to kill that man with the pitch fork, with guns!
What about Kitty Genovese? On March 13, 1964, she was stabbed to death by Winston Moseley near her home in Kew Gardens, Queens, NYC. Nobody helped her, nor did anyone call 911. She was screaming (literally her bloody lungs out!) for help. So, here is a (what if) scenario to contemplate. Had I been alive in 1964 and living in that apartment complex, I would have grabbed my father’s M1 Garand; (an evil assault rifle that won WW2) loaded it with a clip of .30-06 rounds and walked outside to stop the evil murderer in his tracks. NYC has some the strictest gun laws. I would have been arrested and charged with multiple felonies for possibly saving Mrs. Genovese life.
So what is the verdict? I would rather be judged by 12 men, then carried by six because of some victim disarmament law that I only would have foolishly obeyed. I would hope someone of my caliber of character; (pun intended) would do the same for me.

As ted pointed out, there is a simple fact that the lefty’s keep overlooking. Rights are merely enumerated in the Constitution, not GRANTED by it. Rights are just that, rights. If gov grants something, it is a privilege (and can be suspended, revoked, etc). Rights cannot be suspended or revoked. Your right to keep and bear arms is part and parcel of being human. Leftys would do well to realize that attempting to disarm America WILL result in war – a war that they will lose.

If anyone thinks that the outlawing of private firearm ownership is going to usher in a utopian age is delusional for history is illustrative of what can happen to an unarmed population. In the old Soviet Union an unarmed population was subjected to Stalin’s purges and during his tenure around thirty million persons lost their lives. In China another fourty million lost their lives during chairman Mau’s tenure. In Germany the National Socialists outlawed private firearm ownership in 1935 thus disarming the population and allowing for the mass deportation of Jews and others to the extermination camps. We now have this crackpot in North Korea who will murder his own people which people are powerless to prevent this due to their lack of the ability to resist and now with the current refugee crisis in Syria an unarmed population is being chased out of their ancestral homeland by a bunch of armed thugs. The founding fathers were also students of history and were mindful of government being a necessary evil, one which may only be kept in check by an armed population and that is the reason a population needs to be able to own weapons capable of repulsing armed solders, meaning automatic weapons. I do believe that in this nation there should be no restrictions on owning and carrying weapons, but in so saying it should be required that such individuals receive instruction in firearm safety. Think back to all of the Mass Shootings and they all happened at a GUN FREE ZONE. That should tell us something right there.
