The Hard Truth About Korryn Gaines Shooting. What #BlackLivesMatter Won't Tell you...
You may have woken up to the name Korryn Gaines trending. Here's why. Twitter lynch-mob, ASSEMBLE!!
Except, that's not what happened. At all. Now, nobody has all the details yet, but that's never stopped people from illogically raging before...especially in Baltimore (see Freddie Gray’s Autopsy Changes the Narrative. Murder… or Accident? and Justice Prevails: Remaining Charges Against #FreddieGray Officers Dropped).
As for the facts that we know, as per the Baltimore Sun and the official police statement?
Baltimore County police said they shot and killed a woman Monday after she pointed a gun at officers and threatened to kill them during an hours-long standoff at an apartment in Randallstown.Police identified the woman as 23-year-old Korryn Gaines. A 5-year-old boy in the home was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound but is expected to survive, police said.
It is not yet clear whether police or Gaines shot the child, according to police.
Following? Here are two key facts: Gaines refused to cooperate amid a three hour standoff, pointed the gun at the cops, and they aren't sure who shot the child...who according to the article, Gaines was holding when she pulled a gun on the cops in the first place.
Police Chief Jim Johnson said that about 9:20 a.m., several warrant squad members and a uniformed officer went to the home in the first block of Sulky Court to serve arrest warrants on Gaines and a man who lived in the home. The man in the apartment allegedly ran from the home with a 1-year-old child but was caught by officers, police said. The man's name has not been released. Gaines was wanted for failing to appear in cases related to a March incident in which she was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and numerous traffic violations, Johnson said.About 3 p.m., Gaines pointed the long gun at officers and told them if they didn't leave, "she was going to kill them," Johnson said.
An officer then fired once at Gaines, and she shot back several rounds, Johnson said. Police fired again, killing her. It was unclear where in the apartment the child was during the gunfire.
So even when Korryn had a gun pulled on them, the cops still fired a warning shot. Then when she opened fire, that's when the police defended themselves. Self-defense, it's a thing, even for cops. That doesn't stop the Twitter lynch mob.
Comforting her child? Hmmm, was this woman comforting her child from the MAN WANTED FOR ASSAULT in her apartment? Or maybe she was comforting her child amidst the THREE HOUR ARMED STANDOFF she decided to initiate with the police?
Or maybe, just maybe, she's a horrible human being who used her five year old as a human shield. Which, curiously enough, is actually a violation of the Geneva Convention (if we were at war). That's right, her behavior would violate international war treaties designed to curb unnecessary cruelty. That's how reviled, not honored, this woman deserves to be. But you know, international humanitarians are racist. Also, five year old boys might make super efficient human shields. Who are we to judge?
Remember that as you watch Twitter today. But you know how it goes. Social media be as it do.
Also, remember these other cases...
