One might think it impressive that Indonesia, a majorly Muslim country, has no laws against gayness in most of the nation. Finally, the gays can prance about freely and in fairy fashion. The only problem? They might get cuffed and flogged for doing so. And not in a fun, consensual manner practiced by a strapping dude off Craigslist. Apparently there’s a new police force that’s been tasked with specifically targeting all gaysians…
Police in Indonesia’s most populous province plan to deploy a taskforce to investigate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activity, a move likely to fuel concerns of a widening crackdown on the community in the Muslim-majority country.
West Java police chief Anton Charliyan disclosed the plan on Tuesday as two gay men in the province of Aceh were publicly flogged, and days after the police raided a gay club in Jakarta and distributed photos of suspects to the media.
Indonesia’s Islamist groups have long called for the criminalization of gay sex. The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), the vigilante group … has cooperated with police in curbing alleged vice for more than a decade.
Again, to be gay isn’t to break the law in most of Indonesia. But actual homophobia is nevertheless quite rampant in the form of getting curb stomped by local police. Still, rather mild compared to other Islamic nations (see TOLERANCE: Muslim Group Plans Genocide at Turkey’s Gay Pride Parade and Saudi Arabia Blames Social Media for Rising Homosexuality. Solution? Execute the Gays…). After all, a public beating isn’t quite a death sentence.
So moderate, these Indonesians.
This anti-gayness is commonplace in places such as Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia just to name a few. In fact, there’s a bit of a pattern going on here. Countries that are majorly Muslim tend to be majorly gay hating. Despite their supposed level of “moderateness.”
By the way, LGBT? Any time you want to chime in on this one. Maybe consider taking a break from harassing Whole Foods to confront actual homophobia. You can also stop harassing Christian bakers. Seems there are more worthy causes on your horizon than being denied a sugary pastry from someone who worships Jesus.
