Hollywood is making an all-girl remake of the literary classic The Lord of the Flies. That’s right, Lord of the Flies, but with girls. Because Hollywood has given up on anything original (see Original Ghostbusters Director: No, It’s Not Sexist to Hate the Remake and OOPS! And LwC is your hook up for an EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK of the trailer:
Seriously, whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be given a urine test.
We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys. It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned.
Okay, but girls and boys behave differently. And Golding’s book followed boys for an actual reason. Not the least of which is girls do not behave like boys. How is this hard?
The subject matter is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling,” he said. “It is a great adventure story, real entertainment, but it has a lot of meaning embedded in it as well. We’ve gotten to think about this awhile as the rights were worked out, and we’re super eager to put pen to paper.
I know Twitter is doing the outrage thing, soon to be followed by leftists doing the collect five of those tweets and write a thinkpiece about it click bait thing. Really though, how do you take this seriously? We all know how this is going to end up. First the culture war, then the tanking at the box offices, then finally…PATRIARCHY YARGLE BLARGLE.
Plus, the book was overrated in the first place. YEAH, I SAID IT!
Also, the book is about BOYS on an ISLAND who form a society of BOYS. And they turn out savage because sometimes that’s what BOYS DO, especially when there are no girls around. Girls simply do not behave the same way, and to make a movie about a story based on how boys behave, but recasting as girls? It’s not the same freaking story.
Anyone who thinks girls would act the same was as boys, when left to their own devices on an island, clearly missed their own childhood. Or sniffed too much glue.
