For clarification, Jussie Smollett lost in the court of public opinion because Jussie Smollett lied to the public. Hence the unfavorable opinion. Generally speaking, the public isn't keen on being lied to and told it's part of the reason someone was attacked. Especially by a smug, arrogant, little-known actor looking to score some publicity by saying Trump-supporters committed a hate crime against him.
