Dave Chappelle Offers Deep Thoughts on Politics in America: 'F*** Politics'
Dave Chappelle stopped by the Joe Rogan Experience for a kibitz with Rogan. No doubt some reefer too. Whether he's making you laugh, saying things you disagree with, or being all kumbaya, he always has interesting perspectives. Chappelle shared his thoughts on tribalism and the general state of politics in America. He makes a lot of sense, and I'm sure it works if you're Dave Chappelle. For the rest of us, this isn't always practical.
F*** politics, man. Like, literally, that's feckless. I'm telling you, I'm on my kindness conspiracy. As long as I'm kind to people — like, if we live by an ethic of kindness, if we foster trust amongst each other — it will matter less what corporations and politicians say because we'll be able to trust our society's cohesiveness. But if you politicize these things it's going to become increasingly difficult to come to an understanding and an agreement.
You know what's funny? I don't even know what you [Joe Rogan] politically believe or don't believe, but who gives a f*ck? I get along with you every time I see you. I know you're funny, you're a nice dude. We laugh about sh!t. We learn sh!t from each other. We're from two different types of places and types of cultures. And we say terrible sh!t to each other all the f*cking time, and everyone's fine [about it].
It's great advice in concept. We should aim to live our lives this way. But saying "f*ck politics" doesn't work in practice when politics is coming to f*ck you anyway. F*ck politics is a great way to make sure you get f*cked by politics. Politics is coming for your children. Politics affects your livelihood. Politics spent the last year telling you what you can do and when you can do it. People said f*ck politics in 2020 when they voted for Joe Biden, assuming he was a "moderate" who would "unite" the country. When had they paid attention, they would have heard the actual words mumbling out of his mouth. Or that he was nothing more than a sock puppet for people with a radical POLITICAL agenda. That's what ignoring politics gets you.
Could people stand to log off from social media more than they do? Absolutely. It's easy to fall into bubbles and echo chambers. Having conversations with IRL people helps prevent that. It's a helpful reminder that we don't all hate each other as much as advertised. But politics comes for us whether we flirt with it or not.
