I’m paraphrasing something I saw on Twitter, but if there has been one light in the darkness that’s come from the tragedy in Dallas, it’s been the steady leadership of Dallas Police Chief David Brown. Rather than get decisive, rather than push for gun control, Chief David Brown instead stepped up and offered genuine leadership.
If more of our leaders were like this, the country would be in a much better place right now.
“Police officers are guardians of this great democracy. The freedom to protest, the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression. All freedoms we fight for with our lives is what makes us who we are as Americans. And so we risk our lives for those rights. And so we won’t militarize our policing standards.”
“We are not going to let a coward who would ambush police officers change our democracy. We’re not going to do it. Our city – our country – is better than that.”
Political hacks take note. This is leadership. This is inspirational. This isn’t taking a crisis and spinning it for your advantage. This is pure character and showing of strength in a time our country needs it most. Ten extra points for calling the shooters “cowards.”
Yet because David Brown is showing nothing but integrity, it will likely get lost in the cacophony which always follows a tragedy: RACISM, COPS DESERVED IT, TEH GUNZ!!!!
Also, no, it wasn’t the guns. The people responsible for this are people responsible for this. Not inanimate objects which require someone, usually a human, to activate it. As in pulling the trigger-thing so the bullets come out the tube-thing and the gun goes bang bang. Don’t be a dunderhead. While we’re on the subject of stupid, here’s another one: facts are not racist. Stop saying they are.
