There’s a creepy video of Ted Cruz that just surfaced…
Wait, that was Joe Biden. And it was a gif. Sorry, I mean this video…
Dammit, Joe! Stop muddying up my post here. Okay I think I have it this time.
That’s the one. That’s the silver donut. The one that HuffPo is all up in arms about. Innocent. Awkward to be sure, come on now. Anyone who’s tried to kiss a younger family member goodbye knows that sometimes, they are just feeling shy and not having it. Particularly when cameras are on and you just want to get to your iPad games.
But of course…
Sen. Cruz forcing his daughter to kiss and hug him is a prime example of "benign" rape culture: https://t.co/z43dyQpvHz
— Charles Clymer (@cmclymer) February 1, 2016
When pressed by the Daily Caller, self-labeled “male feminist,” Charles Clymer maintained that Cruz made it more likely that his daughter – WHO IS SEVEN – would be raped in the future. Or something. Oh jeez, just read his actual quote.
As you probably know, rape culture is the way in which our society enables sexual violence against women (and men). This spans everything from the portrayal of women as sex objects in media to how consent is taught, expressed, and honored. When you look at the gif I posted, you see that his daughter clearly does not want to be kissed. Were this a playful moment, perhaps our perception would be different, but it’s not. It is obvious she doesn’t want that attention from her father. When I cite this as one example of “benign” rape culture, I mean that it’s one of those seemingly meaningless moments that enables violent acts. No, I don’t think Ted Cruz would ever hurt his daughter nor do I believe anything he’s doing here is remotely sexual, but I think it’s important to discuss the role of consent in this situation. If her father doesn’t respect her boundaries, wouldn’t this make it harder for her to understand she’s able to assert boundaries to unwanted attention down the road?
I see. And just as a reminder…
Oh, that Biden. What a character! What a creepy, rapey character!
Now, there are two big differences between Ted Cruz’s “incident” and Biden’s many. Let me hit them succinctly.
- Unlike Cruz, Biden was making clearly unwanted physical advances onto people who were not his family. Cruz was playing with his daughter. Sometimes children love it, sometimes they don’t. I remember one time my grandfather tickled me so hard, I thought I was going to die of suffocation. When I finally regained my breath, I screamed that I could have died and stormed out of the room. He laughed and continued smoking his cigar. Iz normal. What’s not normal? Kissing someone you just met on the neck, a la Biden.
- Of course leftists never made an issue of Biden. Just like they never make an issue of Bill Clinton and his many rapes (ALLEGED). Consistency is not the goal with the drive-by media. Merely appropriate targeting.
Of course, there is the great irony that when discussing “rape culture,” Charles Clymer notably makes no mention of Islam. You know, the religion whose prescribed Sharia law allows for beating of your wives and requires rape-victims to provide four male witnesses? Thanks to Islamic immigration, Sweden is now the rape capital of the west (no really, read Sweden Is Now The Rape Capital of the West here). Germany’s rape epidemic has gotten so bad that even mayors are pleading with their citizens to dress in parkas and hats (read German Mayor Tells 10-Year Olds to Stop ‘Provoking Raping Refugees” here).
Of course, you’ll find no mention of that at HuffPo. Only stories about Ted Cruz reinforcing “rape culture” and Lena Dunham’s fake rape stories. Because priorities.
